This data set contains areas that have been designated
as Coastal Erosion Hazard Areas under Article 34 of the NYS
Environmental Conservation Law. Coastal Erosion Hazard Areas are
those areas of coastline identified as Natural Protective Features
(dunes, bluffs, beaches, and nearshore areas) or Structural Hazard
Areas which are found along stretches of shoreline which have a
long-term, average, annual recession rate of a foot or more per
year.

Usage Notes:
This data set was developed to represent Natural Protective Feature
Areas (NPFA) and Structural Hazard Areas (SHA) as depicted on official
CEHA maps. However, when viewing either a NPFA landward limit line or a
SHA line, it is important to note that the CEHA Maps filed with the
municipality being viewed are the official documents containing the
legally defined NPFA and SHA boundary lines. Please use the updated,
official CEHA map on file at the local municipality, county, or the
Coastal Erosion Management section when making decisions on or planning
any regulated activities near the CEHA jurisdiction. Additional copies
can be ordered at the address provided above.
When accessing the data using the MHDB Data Selector:
Historical data will be available, and the most recent version will
appear at the end of the selection list. Other versions can be added
to the view to assess change over time. The corresponding buffer file
will also be added to the view.
The dotted lines represent the boundary of a SHA which are those
shoreland areas located landward of natural protective features areas
and have shorelines receding at a long-term annual average recession
rate of 1 foot or more per year. SHA lines are established at 40 times
the long-term annual average recession rate, setback from the CEHA
boundary line. The setback varies based on transitions between
specific features found in the field as well as transitions where
changes in recession rates occur.
CEHA jurisdiction extends 1,000 feet seaward of the mean low water or
a depth of 15 feet, whichever is greater. The 1,000 foot buffer (blue)
on the seaward side of the NPFA landward limit line has been placed as
a reminder of the seaward limit of the nearshore area which is
regulated as a Natural Protective Feature.
Because of limitations on the accuracy of the heads-up digitized
results, a 100 foot buffer (brown) has been placed landward of the
NPFA landward limit line in order to warn users of this dataset that
these areas are in close proximity to the NPFA landward limit line. As
such, any potentially regulated activities being considered in this
area should be reviewed using the corresponding official CEHA map
available from the Coastal Erosion Management section at the address
listed above.

Rate of Recession:Average rate at which the eroding shoreline moves
landward, expressed in feet per year.
Swis_code:Geographical identification number related to
municipalities used by the Department in applications.
Date Amended:Date the CEHA line was revised pursuant to 6NYCRR Part
505, sections 505.21 and 505.22.
